WHAT ARE MOLES?
Moles are small congenital growths on the skin, usually dark, slightly raised
and even sometimes hairy. Moles are referred to in the medical world as
nevus. These growths occur when melanocytes (cells in the skin),
accumulate with the tissue around them. Melanocytes are spread evenly
throughout the skin, and produce the pigment in your body that gives you
your natural skin color. Exposure to the sun causes the melanocytes to
produce more pigment, as a result your skin tans or darkens.
Varying in shape, size and color moles can develop anywhere on the body.
Moles to some are a thing of beauty, while to others can be aggravating
and inconvenient.
Types of Moles
Congenital Nevi
These are moles that are either present at birth, or end up developing
shortly after birth. These moles differ in color and size, and might
change in size and color as you start to age, they can either get
lighter or darker. If you notice a dramatic change in either texture,
color or size you might want to visit a dermatologist.
Acquired Nevi
These are moles that develop during childhood and early on in the adult
years. Usually they are less than 1/4 inch in size and also differ in
size and color.
Dysplastic Nevi
These moles often have a rough surface, come in different cluster color
combinations and the center of these moles might be darkened or raised.
These moles are very common, and even tend to be hereditary. Doctors
tend to believe this type of mole has a high risk of becoming a
melanoma.
